Seems like the only type of religion Japan has an issue with is Western religion. When it comes to their billion gods and currying favors at temples there isn't an issue. I wonder why.

A nation can use it for conquest. (first send Missionaries(priests,spies), if they are accepted and convert enemy nations people and sent back intel, if missionaries are killed, have reason to send Crusaders to avenge the innocent missionaries.)

*historically* missionaries in japan were the first to create a Book that translated the 2 languages, and then applied to Rulers to become their Verbal Translator for important trade and negotiations... (in that way, the church could always alter the translation / mistranslate vs enemies of the church, and provide beneficial deals for themselves while impeding others & using information warfare.)

While the western nations people are kept pacified, monitored by Confessionals, the populace fed "because god" instead of education, as long as the people are ignorant and happy, rulers are safe. Witch hunts for any unfavorable knowledge spreading that would reveal anything contrary to gods teachings to the people,

Unless I'm mistaken, most wars in japan were more for Power and Land or resources, and not Religious Wars. And their Hero Figures valued education, knowledge, and mastery of ones emotions/body/mind.

While the many gods in japan tend to be cultural ideals based on peoples interests, battle/war gods for stories of strength, Wisdom gods for those seeking knowledge, Luck, Honoring the dead, the evil ones to provide stories of what to watch out for.
